aut-onomy

aut-onomy is a Youth Action Team for autistic young people in Oxford. The brain child of the OYAP Trust and brought to wonderful reality in collaboration with Autism Family Support.  The group formed from within Autism Family Support's youth group for 16-21s. OYAP Trust provided the artistic input appointing artist and facilitator Emily to lead the group and local artists to run creative workshops. Autism Family Support's Claire offered her steady guiding hand throughout. The aut-onomy team created some fabulous and exciting creative work. This website showcases aut-onomy's achievements.
aut-onomy
hopes to reach out to other young people and children with autism across the UK and beyond!

FABULOUS FILMS
In web design workshops, with local artist and web designer Tahmina Sorabji, aut-onomy designed and built their own web pages using an open source content management system. Aut-onomy mastered some of the CMS' editing tools, working with layout, fonts, colour, image, audio and video. The web pages showcase their own creative work,  interests and specialisms and generally reach out to the world.

aut-onomy's podcasts > click on the clouds

aut-onomy have vast amounts of knowledge in different and niche areas. From art exhibitions, to film actors, Eurovision, politics and even Wrestling, to name a few. We decided to turn this knowledge into a digital audio file made available on the Internet for downloading to computer or mobile device, typically known as a podcast. aut-onomy recorded podcasts at Radio Bicester's studio. They were up against the clock with strict time in the studio with Radio Bicester's own D.J (Adam Childs).  Click on the clouds to listen!

Graphic recording workshop

aut-onomy went on a crash course into Graphic Recording and Live Illustration.  This fast paced art work simultaneously extracts key thoughts and ideas and summarises them in a way that can be easily and quickly articulated back to people. Chris Shipton taught the group to listen and draw in real time with a deep understanding of the content, which is genius. Here are some snapshots of our quick graphic illustration.

Light painting

aut-onomy experimented with some light painting techniques with Tahmina, our web design artist. The results of our first bash with light painting are in the gallery below. Scroll over the images to discover their inspirations. You might be surprised...

Autism Alphabet

Artist Charlie Henry worked with 20 students from the LVS Oxford School (which offers a supported learning environment for young learners with a diagnosis on the autism spectrum, aged 11 to 19) to produce a film for Autism awareness week that challenges preconceptions around the diagnosis. The film went through the alphabet, creating a list of descriptive words young people came up referring to autism and how it is perceived by other people and themselves. The group interviewed students and teachers as a part of the project and shared the final film with the entire school in an assembly.

Collaboration

OYAP Trust  run youth action teams across the county. OYAP received the funding for the Autism Youth Action Team and approached Autism Family Support to set up a group with their their young people. The Autism Youth Action Teams aims to challenge the negative perceptions of autism and increase understanding of the condition by giving young people the opportunity to express themselves and have a voice on their own terms.

OYAP Trust is a Bicester-based Youth Arts Charity that works with vulnerable young people, between the ages of 7-25, to positively change their lives and their community using creativity and the Arts. We work in partnership with young people and artists across the county to set up and deliver Youth Action Teams. These groups design, create and deliver creative projects that challenge the negative stereotypes that can be given to young people by themselves and others in their
community.

Autism Family Support Oxfordshire are nurturing, creative, and loud & proud about autism. We inspire children and young adults on the autism spectrum and their families by offering training, one-to-one advice and support, youth groups, holiday activities, opportunities to speak about experiences, and much more.
We currently support over 2,500 children and young adults across Oxfordshire, and do a range of amazing work, despite being a small local charity.

For the young people we run 4 youth groups, covering ages 8 – 21, providing a place for young people with Asperger's Syndrome to do ‘the social stuff, or just chill.  Fun, friendships and ‘the social stuff’ are our focus – we make a thing of nurturing friendships amongst our young people, and then letting parents know of the friendships and achievements of their child (always a lovely moment!).

Supporters and funders

We'd like to thank our supporters and funders who made this project possible.
